In 2024 , the 5th International Congress on Ambiances will take place from 8th to 11th of October and will simultaneously gather researchers in two universities located in 2 different countries and 2 distinct continents: Lisbon, Portugal, with the Lusófona University and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro!

This conference brings together scientific contributions from academics, practitioners, artists and doctoral students working on architectural and urban ambiances. They provide an up-to-date account of the variety of themes and issues in this field, presenting the latest research and methodological approaches. Organized into thematic sessions, the presentations examine current concerns, debates, theories, policies and practices in this field, drawing on multidisciplinary expertise from fields as diverse as anthropology, architecture, computer science, cultural studies, design, engineering, geography, musicology, psychology, sociology, urban studies, etc.

In its fifth quadrennial congress, the objective is to outline the state of new questions and conceptual, methodological, and practical issues and adaptations in relation to architectural, urban and landscape ambiances.

Sensory Explorations

Ambiances in a Changing World

After the Congresses of Grenoble (Creating an Atmosphere, 2008), Montreal (Ambiances in Action, 2012), Volos (Ambiances, Tomorrow: The Future of Ambiances, 2016), the online 4th edition (Ambiances, Alloaesthesia: Senses, Inventions, Worlds, 2020) this 5th edition questions the sensory explorations of ambiances in a changing world. It aims to consider how the contemporary environmental, social, technological, political and ethical changes are likely to affect the sensitive worlds, their ambiances, and the ways of experiencing them.

This congress aims to bring together scientific contributions coming from an international base of academics, practitioners, artists and PhD students working on ambiances and atmospheres. They offer an up-to-date account of the variety of themes and issues within this field, showcasing the latest research and methodological approaches. Organised in more than fifty themed sessions in Lisbon and Rio de janeiro, the presentations will examine the ongoing preoccupations, debates, theories, politics and practices of this field, drawing on multidisciplinary expertise from areas as diverse as anthropology, architecture, computer science, cultural studies, design, engineering, geography, musicology, psychology, sociology, urban studies and so on.
